I mean, from the cover picture alone, you can probably get an taste of what it centers, and truly, it doesn't place anything in a better light or sugar coats anything. It's very bitter and honest. I'm actually not sure if it ultimately gives a happy message, but if anything, it does show that lives continues to move and you along with it. The time I spent reading this manga was very intimate, and although my lifestyle and situation is far from what was represented in this book, I empathized with it and understood it. As a nursing major, I truly appreciated how they presented and handled the issue in this story. This manga may not be for everyone. At least in my thoughts, it makes me think I should check out more thoughtful manga like this more often. BRAVE STORY
Summary: Wataru, a cheerful 5th grader, is met with real life problems when his parents split and his mom falls ill. Having befriended Mitsuru, a mysterious kid with his own problem, he learns that there's a way to be granted any wish in the world - through exploring the world of Vision. Media: Movie Thoughts: I watched this movie for the second time in a long while and it still holds up well. A big deviation from the previous digest in terms of story and mood, it's adventurous and youthfully filled with hope and dreams. And magic. Real life is truly presented as believable and relatable in juxtaposition with the fantasy world of Vision. However, even in the fantasy setting, their world is vibrant and rich with life and lore that I'd love to explore myself. The themes presented are pretty common and it's nothing terribly special or original, but it's charming and leaves an impression on how much growth a child can go through. This movie serves as a reminder that kids grow from their surroundings and events in their lives and cultivate their own values and aspirations. Don't underestimate what a kid knows and can or will do to change what matters to them. I recommend it for anyone who wants a light and sweet watch! And maybe shed one tear. Maybe two. HOUSEKI NO KUNI Summary: The world is set in a crescent-like island surrounded with water and centered around 28 humanoid gems - specifically a gem named Phosphophyllite (Phos). Phos, the youngest of the gems, goes through major growth throughout the series - changing physically and mentally - towards their dream of fighting to protect their loved ones. Who do they fight against? The moon people who aim to destroy and take back their broken parts to the moon. Episodes: 12 Thoughts: I watched this randomly with Kimchee and Mew (at Mew's suggestion) and surprisingly fell in love with it. It took a few episodes to warm up to, but the interest was solidified by episode one. Despite the main character being naive, the major growth of the MC throughout is intriguing, especially once you figure out how their "physiology" functions and connects to their mentality. If there's anything to emphasize, the animation is 3D/CG but it's incredibly well done and smooth. It's action packed with moments of deep thought and powerful silence. Recommended if you want something out of the usual anime spectrum and kinda bittersweet. BASTARD
Summary: There is a serial killer in my house! (Taken directly from the webtoon summary) Chapters: 93 Thoughts: Honestly, I read this over a year ago and didn't complete it as it was still updating during the time I found it. To recall from what I remember though, it was simply riveting. The art style is minimal with dull, monochrome tones for the most part but purposely done to reflect the somber, unsettling tone of the comic overall. There's very few moments to laugh but more so moments that make you genuinely uncomfortable with what you're reading. (At least, to a bab like me). Everyone is kinda messed up in the head, but you'll figure out who to cheer for eventually. You can read it here. |
